DAVID BARR – 80 NOT OUT! Renfrew Cricket Club stalwart David Barr celebrated his 80th birthday on 15 January 2011 and shows no signs of letting up. In recognition of his remarkable volunteer work for both Renfrew and Babcock & Wilcox Cricket Clubs, and Scottish Cricket in general, club Captain Sajid Majeed presented David with a silver salver to mark the occasion.
DAVID BARR JUST KEEPS DANCING ALONG! Renfrew Cricket Club stalwart David Barr celebrated his 80th birthday on 15 January 2011 and shows no signs of letting up. An avid ballroom dancer, David has been involved with cricket since YEAR and has given tremendous service as a volunteer to Babcock & Wilcox and Renfrew Cricket Clubs. He has also freely given his time to assisting the West District and The Scottish Cricket Union’s (as Cricket Scotland was known back then) various coaching initiatives. This is remarkable for a man who was born a goalies punt from Ibrox Stadium, in Kinning Park, and like many youngsters then and now, dreamed of pulling on the famous light blue jersey. David played football from the day he was born, playing for the school and army amateur teams, and also trained with Partick Thistle for one year, but there is so much more to this gentleman. He worked with the Glasgow Corporation Youth Clubs as a leader, and obtained certificates in football and table tennis. He also worked as a youth leader in football and table tennis for ten years at Garthamlock, Castlemilk and Bridgeton Y.C. clubs. He was the Leader in charge of an inter exchange group to Bavaria and was responsible for the welfare of 40 teenage boys and girls in Munich, Erlangen and Forcheir (Germany) and Brugges (Belgium). David was also a member of the L.M.S. Rovers boxing club aged 12 and participated in the churches badminton league as an adult. On top of this, David was a founder member of the Babcock and Wilcox Charity Committee and Stars for Spastics organisation, and has been involved with coaching and supervising youngsters for over 50 years. David is presently involved with coaching cricket at Renfrew High School and several local primary schools, as well as West District level, in his capacity as a S.C.U. Staff Coach. He will travel anywhere to foster the game of cricket and to get youngsters off the streets and enjoying sport, regardless of race or religion. David is also currently involved with the coaching of both senior and youth players at Renfrew Cricket Club, which is a well known multi cultural club, and has also served on the club committee for a number of years, ensuring the continued survival of a club that has been in existence for over 100 years. In his spare time he also assists the club groundsman Paul Goodman with pitch preparation and the maintenance of the ground. Away from the sporting arena, David spends a lot of time at numerous dance clubs indulging his passion for ballroom dancing and attributes this along with a good sense of humour to his continuing good health in his later years. He is also the father of four children and grand father to seven children, and has been involved with countless other sporting activities. It truly is a mystery how a man who has given so much to others over the years, in both Glasgow and Renfrewshire, has not been recognised for his commitment and efforts. (Reported by: David Mudie, 4th February 2011.) Paul Goodman Scottish Sports Award
Local Hero Rangers’ assistant manager Ally McCoist was joined by tycoon Michelle Mone to present the Local Hero award to Paul, at the Scottish Sports Awards, sponsored by the Sunday Mail and Sport Scotland. Paul devotes a huge amount of his spare time to work on the coaching and training of the clubs junior and youth players for his beloved Renfrew Cricket Club. He also finds time to deal with the maintenance of the ground and pitch preparation at Renfrew, and he has been largely responsible for the dramatic improvement in the quality of the pitches and the continued growth of the clubs’ youth section. Paul said “This award is fantastic. It is giving the whole sport recognition, not just me. Hopefully, this will encourage more kids to come down to the club and try cricket.” Everyone at Renfrew Cricket Club is delighted that Paul’s hard work and devotion has been recognised with this thoroughly deserved award. Match Report: clinching promotion to WDCU division 3
McTaggart and
Mickel Renfrew’s second eleven Moorcroft ended the 2010 season in
sensational style with a last gasp victory over Ardencaple in a thrilling
finale in Helensburgh, clinching promotion to WDCU division
3. Put into bat on a damp wicket
clearly favouring the fielding side, events got off to a disastrous start
for the Renfrew men as Paul Goodman was dismissed from the opening
delivery of the match. Two balls later things got worse as Clayton
Lambert hammered the ball straight into the hands of the fielder at mid
on. Shani, in at four, never looked comfortable and was soon out
bowled to become the third victim of the innings. At 2/3 things
weren’t looking promising but the ever reliable Graeme Phillips and
skipper Parvase Majeed then set about rebuilding the innings, playing with
extreme caution. However with the score on 29 the captain also fell
as Ardencaple began to move into the ascendancy. Debutant Zahid
Malik was next in and after a careful start, took a shining to the bowling
as he looked to increase the run rate. Although he was connecting
well, the wet outfield slowed the ball down more than often, with fours
becoming ones on several occasions. Together with Graeme, Zahid put
on 135 for the fifth wicket allowing Moorcroft to stage a remarkable
recovery from their perilous position earlier on. Zahid reached his
fifty in the process and Graeme looked poised to do the same when disaster
struck. Zahid called for a second before sending his partner back
half way, resulting in Graeme being run out - six short of a deserved
fifty. Taral Khasiya was next in but was out lbw for a duck – his
first of the season in all competitions - and when Steven Black followed
in similar fashion, it looked as though Ardencaple had tightened things
towards the tail end of the innings. Zahid however continued to look
for boundaries but after a couple more lusty blows was out bowled for an
enthralling 77. A brief cameo from Javed and some late hitting from
Waseem then helped take the total over the two hundred mark as Moorcroft
finished on a competitive 202 all out.
Having been held to a draw by
the same opposition in the home match earlier this season, Moorcroft were
wary of the possibility of lightning striking twice therefore wickets were
essential. Waseem Ahmed made early inroads, removing both the
opening pair in the fifth over before the hosts sent in first eleven
recruits M.Pendle and S.Batty to steady the ship. However Waseem
soon struck again to remove Pendle as the visitors began to sense the win
was on. Ardencaple number five P. Davies had other ideas though as
he put together a fifth wicket partnership of 79 with Batty who reached
his fifty in the process. With the score on 139 and seven wickets in
hand, the home side seemed to be crusing towards victory until Taral
Khasiya finally provided the breakthrough - having danger man Batty caught
brilliantly by Shani at long off to bring Moorcroft back into the
game. After a disappointing first spell Zahid then returned to
immediately remove Davies along with the number six in quick succession to
give the visitors some renewed hope. With the light rapidly
deteriorating, Ardencaple still looked favourites, needing less than fifty
runs from the final ten overs with four wickets in hand. However
given the conditions, it was agreed that Moorcroft would use their slower
bowlers to even the odds. Shani changed to bowling spin from one end
and Graeme was back on at the other as the visitors piled men around the
bat looking to finish things off. But the Helensburgh side seemed
unfazed, blocking almost every delivery, and it now seemed a draw was on
the cards…but for a dramatic twist! A suicidal run out followed by
two quick wickets from Graeme had the hosts reeling all of a sudden with
three overs to go. Both Shani and Graeme tried their best to claim
the final wicket but it looked like it just wasn’t meant to be as the
final over beckoned. With nothing to lose, and all to gain, captain Parvase Majeed decided to bring himself on in a last ditch attempt to snatch victory. Ball 1: defended. Ball 2: defended. Ball 3: defended. Ball 4: missed by the keeper but no byes taken. Ball 5: defended. Ball 6: Tossed up…flighted…dipping…defended…but somehow the ball crept under the bat on the bounce and touched middle stump with just enough force to remove the bails! Victory from the final ball of the match - and Hughenden’s defeat to Whiteinch on the same day - means Moorcroft end the campaign in second place in the WDCU’s fourth division, guaranteeing promotion to division three next season.

Match Report:
MOORCROFT GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS IN
STYLE! Moorcroft bounced back from last weekends
disappointing defeat to Scotindians with a resounding victory over
Irvine’s second eleven Marress at KGV on Saturday. With several
members unavailable and a late call off in the firsts resulting in captain
Parvase Majeed being asked to fill in, Moorcroft were left with only eight
players including two juniors - both Owais Shah and Kyle Black
making their second eleven debuts. Clayton
Lambert deputised for stand in skipper Paul Goodman to win the toss and
logically elected to field first. Regardless of the team's
depletion, spirits were still high as the players took to the field
looking to get back to winning ways. However it was crucial that the
fielding be kept tight as Moorcroft would have to manage with just six
outfielders for every over. Waseem
Ahmed and Graeme Phillips opened the bowling and kept things tight before
Graeme inflicted the first blow, clean bowling Marress opener G
Holyoake for 13. Despite the shortage of fielders,
the humid conditions were causing the ball to move considerably, making
life extremely difficult for the batsmen. Taral Khasiya was soon
brought on first change and bowled tidily, claiming the wicket of other
opener J Conway for 13 during his seven over spell to keep up the
pressure. However the bulk of the damage was to be done by Phillips
who effectively wiped out the top order during his marathon spell of
fifteen overs, seven maidens and four wickets - conceding a mere
twenty runs in the process. With
the opposition five wickets down and the scoring constrained, Moorcroft
captain Paul Goodaman placed his faith in the youngsters allowing both
Owais and Kyle the opportunity to bowl their first overs in senior
cricket. It proved to be a fruitful move as both boys claimed a
wicket each in their opening overs to inflict further damage on the
opposition. Shobhit Dihora was also brought on to bowl for the first time
this season and likewise did not disappoint, claiming two wickets to
finish off the Marress innings with the score at exactly one hundred.
Despite
the impressive performance in the field, Moorcroft were aware that they
would still have to bat with the reduced numbers. Therefore it was
vital to get off to a solid start when chasing the relatively small target
set by the visitors. Captain Paul Goodman and Clayton Lambert opened
the batting and after a couple of fairly reserved overs, soon began to
take the attack to the opposition. Clayton was playing as aggressive
as ever, with Paul providing steady support yet also dispatching the bad
balls to the boundary. Both batsmen raced past an opening stand of
fifty and looked set to go all the way before Paul was unfortunate to be
trapped in front with the score on ninety-nine. Taral was due in
next however with only two runs required, Owais was promoted to come in
and finish the job. The Marress men had nothing to lose so closed in
around the bat hoping to put pressure on the young man. But it was
to be all over in just one delivery as he nonchalantly hooked the ball to
the square leg boundary to take Moorcroft home in only the seventeenth
over. Putting
aside the remarkable victory, there were several positives gained from
this sensational performance. The youngsters making their debuts
could not have shone any brighter in the field and with their
bowling. Similarly the dilemma of the seconds not having a full time
spinner may now be over as Shobhit demonstrated he is more than capable of
producing with his off-spin at this level. The standard set in the
field was exceptional and the commitment and dedication displayed by the
team to ensure victory must be commended. With Moorcroft in such a promising position in their pursuit of promotion, dedication and reliability at this stage of the season are extremely essential. Sadly that was not the case on Saturday given the number of absentees. However with two games of the 2010 campaign remaining, hopes are high and this display has provided a successful demonstration of the strength in depth and character of the Moorcroft squad.
S.M.R.H. BEAT
MACTAGGART & MICKEL RENFREW BY 6 WICKETS, at SMRH SNCL: 2, Saturday 7th
August 2010 MacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew 108 all out (43.5
overs, W Jackson 4-27, AMG Brock 3-16), S.M.R.H. 110-4 (34 overs, JC Kent 51*) (Scorecard)
Match Report:
Renfrew
after winning the Greenwood cup Final on Thursday night defeating Queens
Park by 16 runs , travelled through to Edinburgh to play SMRH in SNCL
division 2. The
Renfrew skipper Sajid Majeed on seeing a damp, green, softish wicket
realised it was going to be a crucial toss, unfortunately called
incorrectly and SMRH won and elected to field , putting Renfrew into
bat. Renfrew
knew it was going to be an extremely difficult wicket , with excessive
seam movement and indifferent bounce, this proved to be the case with
wickets falling at regular intervals with the first and last wickets
yielding the highest partnerships, Ahmad Said and Fida Hussain 24
and Imtiaz Uddin and Sajid Majeed 18, not very encouraging, the
eventual total was a meagre 108 in 43.5 overs , Zia ul Haq top scored with
25 and most of the Batsman could not be faulted as the bowlers who took
the bulk of the wickets were poor but had the good fortune of the wicket
turning a bad ball into a wicket taking ball. The slow outfield and the
wicket meant runs were easy to come by , another 40 or 50 runs would have
been invaluable. If the
conditions remained the same Renfrew would have a chance , unfortunately
by the tea interval the sun had come out and the wicket was drying out
quickly as was the outfield. With such a change in conditions, the wicket
was not as unpredictable and the outfield was faster and this made the
prospect of a victory unlikely. Renfrew tried in vain with Majeed and
Hussain picking a wicket up each and Uddin taking two bowling with pace
and bounce, looking impressive. SMRH finished on 110 for 4 in 34 overs
winning the match by 6 wickets, with their South African professional Jon
Kent unbeaten on 51 not out. Skipper Majeed after learning of the other results with Dunfries winning their game , they also won the title with Renfrew their nearest challengers losing, Renfrew were still in second position and Majeed could not fault the players too much as the initial conditions were the main factor in the loss and the benifit was with the team which won the toss. (Reported by : Sai Majeed, Renfrew Captain)
RENFREW CLINCH GREENWOOD TROPHY! Renfrew 144-6 (20 overs, F.Hussain
70, A.Aslam 32, Ul-Haq 2/26) McTaggart and Mickel Renfrew achieved their first major success of the season as they defeated Queens Park in the final of the 2010 Greenwood Trophy. The match was played at Uddingston’s Bothwell Castle ground in front of a healthy contingent, with several Renfrew Cricket Club members in attendance to support their team. A fine, dry evening coupled with the suave facilities provided by the hosts was perfect for the occasion and made for some exciting cricketing action. Skipper Parvase Majeed won the toss and elected to
bat on a wicket that looked promising for the batsmen as Fida Hussain and
Wasim Khan were sent in to open. However the innings did not start
as smoothly as intended with Wasim being run out in the second over,
setting off for a single before opting against completing the run.
This brought to the crease Anjum Aslam who was in fine form on the back of
consecutive fifties in the quarter and semi finals of the
competition. Together with Fida, Anjum got the score moving as both
batsmen scored at ease, playing watchfully yet punishing anything
loose. Fida never looked out of touch and comfortably reached his
own second fifty of the competition as Renfrew pushed to post a formidable
total. The turning point of the innings came when Anjum was
dismissed by a dubious looking run out decision and was followed shortly
by Fida who was out bowled for a brilliant 70, looking to up the
tempo. Zia Ul Haq came in and provided valuable impetus with some
well struck boundaries, but was unfortunate to be caught in the deep for
24 having middled one cleanly. Renfrew then sent in the big hitting
Imtiaz Uddin and Kamran Saeed to finish with some late momentum, however
both fell in quick succession as Queens Park kept the final overs tight,
leaving Renfrew to end on a slightly below par total of
144. Renfrew
were fielding a strong bowling attack so hopes were still high of
clinching victory as the Queens Park openers made their way to the
crease. The opposition decided to open with captain Tariq Din and
the prolific Mohammed Kamran as they looked to get off to a positive
start. Tariq had a lucky escape when he was dropped early on, on the
long off boundary from the bowling of Sajid Majeed. However having
survived the scare, he was looking to make the most of his reprieval and
began to play some aggressive strokes as the Queens Park innings started
to gain momentum. Mohammed Kamran was also looking in good touch,
scoring freely with some unorthodox strokes as both openers reached their
fifty partnership in the eighth over. The opposition were now in the
ascendancy, however the momentum slowly began to swing in Renfrew’s
favour with the introduction of Kamran Saeed, whose metronomic deliveries
were almost impossible for the batsmen to get away. Saeed was
eventually rewarded with the prize wicket of Mohammed Kamran, out for 34,
as Renfrew began to sense an opportunity of getting back into the
game. With the scoring restricted, the pressure began to mount and
shortly afterwards Tariq was run out for 38, going for a second that was
never there. With both openers gone, Renfrew began to tighten the
noose although Queens Park number three Kalpinder
had other ideas as he
tried to counter attack with some expansive strokes of his own.
However he was soon to go, caught superbly by captain Parvase taking
a one handed Collingood-esque beauty on the boundary to shift things right
back in favour of Renfrew. With the danger men effectively back in
the hut, Imtiaz Uddin and Fida Hussain kept the remaining overs tight and
Renfrew wrapped up the victory in style with four simultaneous run outs
from the last four balls – credit to Wasim, Imtiaz, Kamran and Steven for
their deadly accurate throws from the deep on each occasion as Queens
Park finished on 132 for the loss of seven wickets. The victory was celebrated joyously by
all the Renfrew members including everyone who had travelled to support
the players. Club chairman Jim McAuslan was also in attendance and
was evidently delighted by the team’s achievements as the hard work put in
by the members both on and off the field this season has finally began to
pay off. With both the first eleven and second eleven still in contention for their respective league trophies, Renfrew will continue fighting hard to try and make the most of what has been an exciting campaign so far.

RENFREW BEAT VICTORIA IN T20 GREENWOOD CUP SEMI FINAL AT KGV. Wednesday July 28th 2010, (Match Photos) McTaggart and
Mickel Renfrew booked their place in the final of the 2010 WDCU Greenwood
Trophy with a comprehensive 104 run demolition of Victoria (44 allout) at
KGV on Wednesday evening. Batting first Renfrew managed to post a
competitive yet below par total of 148. Anjum Aslam was the pick of the
batting, top scoring with 52, his second consecutive half century of the
competition. WEEKEND SUMMARY FOR 25th -26th July 2010 After almost three weeks of incessant rain and washed out matches, the improved weather finally provided the opportunity for some competitive cricket. However lack of match practice and rustiness was evident in abundance as both McTaggart and Mickel Renfrew and Moorcroft failed to provide a victory to maintain the impressive form that has continued throughout this season.
Having been out of action for so long, shortcomings seemed inevitable and this proved to be the case as the first eleven were beaten away to Weirs, ending their impressive winning streak. The hosts batted first and compiled a reasonable 227 runs for the loss of seven wickets after 50 overs. However in reply McTaggart and Mickel Renfrew never really got going and struggled to put together any significant partnerships as the game slowly slipped out of reach. The visitors were eventually bundled out for 102 in 36 overs.
At home, the seconds took on WDCU 4 relegation battlers Kirkstyle, looking to keep up the pressure on division leaders Scotindians. With their side sitting second bottom, Kilmarnock decided to load some “irregulars” into their seconds which proved to be decisive towards the outcome of this match.
Batting first, Kirkstyle ended their innings on 344/7 - with more than half the score coming from the bat of number six Abbas Khan who’s hard hitting 173 effectively batted the hosts out of the game. Chasing over three hundred is never easy, and losing your top four batsmen within the first twenty overs makes it almost impossible. However despite this collapse, Captain Parvase Majeed and his vice Paul Goodman demonstrated fantastic resilience and fortitude as they grafted their way to a partnership of 108 runs for the sixth wicket. Both batsmen reached warranted half centuries in the process and helped Moorcroft grind out a draw, finishing the game on 235/7.
On a more positive note, the weekend did end on a high as Renfrew’s development XI put in a fantastic performance against a strong Ferguslie outfit, featuring both their professional and overseas amateur, in the Sunday league fixture away at Meikleriggs. Batting first Renfrew amassed a competitive 183/9 in their 40 overs and followed this up by bowling out the hosts for 161 in 37.5 overs to win by 23 runs. This impressive victory puts Taral Khasiya’s men top of the WDCU’s Sunday league second division with three games remaining.
Both Saturday teams will be looking to bounce back quickly as we move towards the final month of the 2010 campaign. This coming weekend the first eleven face Corstorphine at home, while the seconds are away to Scotindians in a crucial top of the table clash. Having beaten the same team in their previous meeting earlier this season, Parvase will be sure to have his men fired up for the prospect of regaining their position at the top of the WDCU’s fourth division.

bottom of the table Edinburgh in SNCL division 2 match on Sat 3rd July. On
arriving and inspecting the wicket it was obvious that not very much time
had been spent on preparing it, in fact their seemed to be an absence of a
straight edge for the crease lines, and the remains of oil leaks from
whatever machinery had in fact been used. Were all over the
wicket Renfrew skipper Sajid Majeed had decided that if he were to
win the toss they would field first, unfortunately he lost so
Edinburgh decided they would bat first, just what Renfrew wanted them to
do. It
was in fact Majeed who removed both K.Pervez and the mouthy
K.Hussain cheaply both caught out by
the late swing. K,Saeed followed this up by removing
Z.UlHaq with the score on 3, this brought the Edinburgh professional A.Mir
to the crease and he put on 68 for the fourth wicket before he was caught
behind by Zia ul Haq off the bowling of Imtiaz Uddin, for which he walked
before the umpire had a chance to give him out, this was not before
he had been caught by Ahmad Said , who sportingly did not claim the catch
as he knew the ball had not carried to him. Spinners Fida Hussain and
Ahmad Said then accounted for the rest of the Edinburgh team by taking 4
and 2 wickets respectively leaving Edinburgh on 202 all out. It would be interesting how Renfrew would cope with
the unpredictable wicket. Renfrew openers Said and Hussain patiently
negotiated their way through the minefield whilst putting on another great
opening partnership of 106 before Hussain eventually holed out at mid-on
for 42, this brought the prolific Anjum Aslam to the crease who was again
the victim of another mysterious lbw decision, it seems he must be getting
shorter every week as whenenver it hits his thigh he gets given out lbw,
it does not help when the Edinburgh fielders were appealing for anything
and thus pressurising the umpires, not quite as "sporting" as Renfrew ,
but then this is to be expected of Edinburgh. This brought Zia ul Haq to
the crease who had recently been out of form with the bat, it seemed the
spur he needed was the constant sledging of Edinburgh wicket keeper
K.Hussain to spur him on to share a partnership of 78 with Said before
Said was strangely given out, stumped when he seemed to be in the
crease attempting to hit a a six to see him reach his third consecutive
century and the winning runs for Renfrew. He ended on 94, another superbly
timed innings, Ul Haq hit the winning runs in the next over finishing on
40, Renfrew hammering Edinburgh by 7 wickets keeping them rooted to bottom
spot and consolidating Renfrew’s 2nd position, making next
weeks game v Dumfries all the more interesting as Dumfries lost, narrowing
the gap. (Report by Farhan

Photos) After the disappointment of the recent back-to-back
draws, MacTaggart and Mickel Renfrew’s second eleven returned to winning
ways with a brilliant run chase in a seven wicket victory over
Prestwick’s seconds St Ninians in their WDCU division 4 match on Saturday.
On a blustery day at KGV, Moorcroft captain Parvase
Majeed won the toss and put the visitors in to field. With the team
bolstered by the return of Muneeb Gill and Shezad Ahmed, the hosts got off
to the prefect start, as both St Ninians openers were dismissed within the
first four overs. However this was as good as it was to get for
Moorcroft as numbers 3 and 4, P. Stafford and M. Openshaw put on 150
for the third wicket. After Stafford departed for 72,
Openshaw took over and went on to score a brilliantly paced
hundred. With the score on 193 and only 4 overs remaining, it looked
like Moorcroft had done well to peg back the visitors. However
number 5 batsman N. Calderwood had other ideas as he blazed his way
to a swift fifty and together with Openshaw amplified the total to 276/3
at the end of the allotted 50 overs. Yet again it was a disappointing effort in the
field from the Moorcroft men, with none of the bowlers, apart from Graeme
Phillips who bowled exceptionally well, coping with the windy
conditions. Waseem Ahmed in particular proved to be expensive as the
hosts handed the opposition plenty of easy runs, helping them post an
imposing total. In reply Parvase made it clear that he was going to
go for the target and set the batting order accordingly. However a
good start would be imperative and openers Clayton Lambert and Balawal
Fahim provided exactly that as the two went about building a solid
platform for the hosts to try and chase down the target. Clayton was
his normal aggressive self, with Balawal initially playing the anchor
role, and this combination proved extremely effective as Moorcroft reached
the drinks break with the score on 160 for no loss and both batsmen
settled. Clayton was striking the ball well and powered his way to
84, but was unfortunate to toe-end one straight to the fielder at
cover. Balawal then took over as the aggressor and began to score
freely with some elegant cover drives and classy flicks. However
just like Clayton, he was also to fall for 84, run out going for a risky
second. Both openers were unfortunate not to reach deserved
hundreds, however their mammoth opening stand of 186 was the highest first
wicket partnership at the club this season and was paramount to
Moorcroft’s success in this game. Shani, who was in at number 3, had a shaky start
but soon found the bowling to his liking as he repeatedly dispatched the
ball to the boundary. With 2 runs required for victory, he was
looking all set for his fifty when he skied one to mid wicket…but was
dropped. However he did not learn his lesson as he was out bowled
next ball for 48. Skipper Parvase then put away the winning runs as
Moorcroft won the match with eight overs to spare, leading to joyous
scenes on the boundary from the Renfrew men. A poor
display with the ball was compensated for by an enthralling display with
the bat and this fantastic victory has now breathed new confidence into
the seconds as they continue to push for promotion to the WDCU’s third
division. Full credit must go to Clayton and Balawal for their
composed batting at the top of the order which was crucial in
Moorcroft winning this match and getting their campaign back on
track. NATIONAL

Innings 268/2 (Overs 47.2, Ahmad Said 113*, F Hussain 60, A Aslam
46) Club
professional Ahmed Said scored his second consecutive century with an
unbeaten 113 as he helped McTaggart and Mickel Renfrew beat Freuchie to
record their fourth successive league victory in the SNCL division
2. Ahmed would like to dedicate his match winning hundred to his
daughter Hajra who turned 5 on Friday 25th June. There had been a couple of late changes and
teenagers Ryan Murray and Steven Black who made his first eleven debut,
were in for Paul Goodman and Anil Roy. MacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew
skipper Sajid Majeed lost the toss to Scott Galloway the
Freuchie skipper in the last game of the first half of the season in the
SNCL DIV 2 match, who elected to bat first. This was the first home toss
Majeed had lost and as expected Freuchie decided to bat first and it meant
that Renfrew for the first time in the league were fielding first, it was
not ideal but Renfrew hoped to continue their run of 5 wins out of
the last 5 SNCL games. Their was a run out in the 3rd over and this was
folowed up by Kamran Saeed having the Freuchie professional Junaid
Khan caught behind for 16 after he had hit him for a couple of boundaries.
Saeed followed this up repeating the feat by removing Birrel. freuchie
were 39 for 3 and it was looking promising for Renfrew. It seemed the
Renfrew players had relaxed and allowed Freuchie back into the game by
dropping both players and a contested decision for Galloway being adjudged
not out. Scott Gourlay (the former Scotland all-rounder) finally departed
for 50 adding 117 for the 3rd wicket. Wickets fell at regular intervals
but Renfrew struggled with their bowling and fielding and conceded 61
extras by the time Freuchie were all out for 267 in 48.1 overs. Saeed had
bowled well taking 4 wickets for 41 runs in his 10 overs, Anjum Aslam
finished with 3 wickets for 28 runs from 5 overs. It was a poor bowling
and fielding performance and Renfrew would have to work extremely hard to
win this game. Renfrew
professional Ahmad Said who had been in good batting form after his
previous weeks century, opened with Fida Hussain. Freuchies professional
Junaid Khan was opening the bowling and bowled at speeds of 87 mph plus
and it was going to be difficult as their are not any bowlers even close
to that pace in this division. Khan prepared both openers with short balls
and bouncers and even bowled round the wicket at times to them. In order
to intimidate them. Both openers stood firm, at times having to duck
and weave at the short balls but still managed to despatch Khan several
times to the boundary playing some cultured shots. Hussain was eventually
given out caught behind chasing a wide ball which he was adamant he had
not touched, unfortunately the decision went against him and he was out
for 60, in a first wicket stand of 127. This brought Anjum Aslam to the
crease and he also continued his good form scoring with ease before he was
eventually out to Khan caught at deep gully for 46, adding 84 for the 2nd
wicket. Said had made his half century and was getting close to his second
century in as many weeks, he was now joined by Zia ul Haq who gave him the
support required to see the match through with Said hitting a straight six
to win the game, when six runs were required. Said finished unbeaten on
113 not out carrying his bat for 47.2 overs , with Renfrew finishing on
268 for 2 , winning the match comfortably by 8 wickets, Said had been
immense throughout the innings showing discipline when required, guile and
technical ability seeing the job completed to the end. It had been another
run fest at KGV which had seems Renfrew come out on top again, in another
close game. The result sees Renfrew consolidate their second position
in the table, with leaders Dunfries defeating 3rd placed West
Lothian. (Match Report : Sai Majeed, 1st XI

MacTaggart
and Mickel Renfrew’s 2XI were in action against fellow WDCU:4 challengers
Hughenden in an eagerly anticipated top of the table clash on
Saturday. With Hughenden’s home ground being unavailable, the match
was held at nearby Glasgow Accies High School Ground. On a small pitch with tiny boundaries, WDCU4
leaders Moorcroft won the toss and elected to field as the game began with
a bang! Hughenden opener (and STV sports presenter) Raman Bhardwaj hit the
first ball of the match straight to point…only to be dropped.
However the very next ball he was gone, clean bowled to give the visitors
an early breakthrough. Number 3 Jamie McEwan then came in and was
involved in two crucial partnerships, first with Hughenden skipper Stephen
Bates and then with number 4 Abhi Bhartia. However after his
dismissal it was Bhartia who took over and despite a slow start, soon
exploded into life as he continuously clattered the ball to the short
boundaries to finish unbeaten on 118* Fielding was a crucial element of this match
especially given the size of the boundaries, however Moorcroft were
fielding a slightly under strength team and the cracks soon began to
show. Catches were dropped and several misfields went to the
boundary allowing the opposition plenty of ‘free’ runs as the hosts posted
a formidable total of 303/5 in 50
overs. In reply Moorcroft got their innings off to a
positive start as openers Wasim Khan and Clayton Lambert put on 70 for the
first wicket before both fell in quick succession. This brought
together Taral Khasiya and Shani who continued where the openers had left
off, as the visitors brought up 100 runs after 17 overs. However
once again, both wickets fell quickly to put Moorcroft on the back
foot. Captain Parvase Majeed and Graeme Phillips then came in and
began to steady things but with victory slowly slipping out of sight, a
draw seemed the next best option. Both batsmen played sensibly and
put on 61 for the 5th wicket before Parvase was out bowled for
26, trying to up the scoring rate in order to reach the 228 runs required
to gain draw points. Graeme continued steadily and reached a
deserved fifty, his first of the season, as Moorcroft crept towards their
target - eventually reaching the 228 mark in the penultimate over.
Fittingly Graeme remained until the end, unbeaten on 65* as he and Javed
saw out the final few balls to end the Moorcroft innings on 238/6.
Despite a poor fielding performance, credit must be given to the batsmen
who all contributed and batted well to take some valuable points from this
match. The
match itself was strikingly similar to the first meeting between both
sides earlier this season where it was Moorcroft who posted more than 300,
yet the opposition managed to claim the draw with no real
difficulty. This was however Moorcroft’s second successive draw and
Parvase is now keen for his side to bounce back and return to winning ways
with the visit of Prestwick’s second eleven St Ninians next Saturday at
home. (Match

193/8 (50 overs, B.Strickland 44, A. Shezhad 3/46, W. Ahmed
2/28) Moorcroft welcomed WDCU division four’s basement
side Ardencaple on a glorious day at King George V Playing Fields,
confident of maintaining their recent run of good form. The
plan was simple, win the toss, bowl first and then chase down the
target. With a strong batting line up including Zia Ul-Haq,
Moorcroft were looking odds on for a comfortable victory. However
this was not to be the case as this game was clearly blown before it even
began. As a result of some team members arriving late,
despite everyone being told to be at the ground for 11.30am, the plan fell
apart. Having won the toss, Moorcroft captain Parvase Majeed was
forced to opt against fielding first because of the disruption caused by
the latecomers. This also meant the hosts had to start the game with
a reshuffled batting order. Parvase
opened the innings with Graeme Phillips however he was out in the second
over, caught at mid on for 1.
Clayton
Lambert was next in and began his innings in positive fashion, hammering a
four straight back past the bowler to get off the mark. Graeme Phillips
was also looking good but was unfortunate to be out playing on for 15, and
was shortly followed by Clayton, also out bowled for 18. Taral Khasiya was
the next man in and, together with Ryan Murray, began to get the score
moving. Both Taral and Ryan played with positive intent and were looking
good untill the latter was out, caught at mid off for 16, Taral
then proceeded to take the attack to the bowlers, reaching his fifty
in the process. However he was unfortunate to have been given out caught
behind for a brilliant 68, including 15 boundaries in total! This
triggered a typical Renfrew collapse as Javed was next to go, followed by
Shani - out first ball and then Amir Shehzad for a duck. Even
Zia failed to contribute meaningfully as he was out caught brilliantly at
mid on for 4. Anil was still in, however was yet to get off the mark
when he was joined by number 11 Waseem Ahmed. At 166/9 and with more
than 16 overs remaining, both batted responsibly and took Renfrew to a
respectable 239 with a final wicket stand of 63. Waseem was the last
man out, bowled for 17, leaving Anil stranded on 44.
In reply, the visitors got off to a flier as the
opening batsmen took a shining to Anil’s bowling. After an expensive 3
overs, he was taken off and replaced by Graeme Philips to steady
things. At the other end however, Waseem was keeping it tight and
deservedly claimed the wickets of both openers. Ardencaple then
provided stubborn resistance in the form of number four Bobby Strickland,
who came in and just defended. Initially it seemed, he was getting his eye
in, however this defensive display continued long through the middle overs
until eventually he was gone, caught behind for a monotonous 44 off
Amir to bring Moorcroft back to life. At one point all 3 results
were possible, with both teams pushing for victory. However a couple
of quick wickets later it looked like the hosts were going to pull it
off...but the Ardencaple tail had other ideas as they completely shut up
shop and defended out the remaining overs to settle for a
draw. A
disappointing result, full of complacency from the Moorcroft men
could now cost them their position as WDCU4 leaders. With respect to
the visitors, Moorcroft are the only team who has failed to beat bottom
side Ardencaple this season. The commitment and attitude of certain
individuals must come under question as this poor result should be used as
an eye opener for the tougher games to come if Renfrew are to stand any
chance of gaining promotion, never mind winning the division. RENFREW

the Renfrew Captain, won the toss and decided to bat first. Renfrew
openers Ahmad Said and Ghulam Rabani put on a good partnership of 32 for
the first wicket before Rabani was caught by Kelburne wicket keeper
O'Connell off professional David Harper for 7. Kelburne then took control
of the match as Harper bowled Fida Hussain for 0 with the score still
32. Harper then removed Renfrew's professional Said for 28.
Jamie MacDonald then had Zia Ul-Haq caught by Kelburne captain Steven
McLister for 11 leaving Renfrew at 50 for the loss of 4 wickets.
Paul Goodman then joined Anjum Aslam and the fifth wicket partnership
added some stability to the Renfrew innings. Goodman was out for 7 for the
fifth wicket with the score on 78 but along with Aslam had steadied the
innings over the last ten over's. Remarkably Kelburne again
struck for the next wicket with the score still on 78 as Anil Roy was
bowled by Scott Hamilton for 0. Captain Sajid Majeed promoted
himself to come in next and together with first Aslam and
then Kamran Saeed Renfrew started to take back some control of the
match. Unfortunately Sajid Majeed was injured while batting,
requiring a runner to complete his innings, and was eighth out for 5
with the score on 140. Renfrew had two wickets remaining but
both fell in quick sucession to end the innings with a score of 153
all out in 46.4 overs.
When Renfrew started the innings, captain
Majeed opened the bowling but only lasted 2 balls before he had
to admit defeat (later having to leave the field and be replaced by twelth
man Taral Khasiya) and the over was completed by Aslam.
Renfrew's other opening bowler Kamran Saeed made the initial break
through when he had Hamilton caught behind by Ul-Haq for 7 with the
score on 13. Imtiaz Uddin captured the second wicket when he bowled
Cook for 5 with Kelburne on 26. Renfrew kept the pressure on Kelburne when
Uddin struck again, having Bennett caught by Aslam for 14 with 1 more run
added to the total. Kelburne professional Harper and captain McLister
shared a critical fourth wicket partnership before Harper was
caught by Moshin Majeed for 22 with the total on 77. Miller was next
to go for 5 with the when he was bowled by Hussain, leaving Kelburne on 87
for 5. Aslam then had Greenhorn caught behind for 2 by Ul-Haq -
his second catch of the game - with Kelburne now on 98/6. The next
three wickets to fall were all to run outs including the crucial
wicket of captain McLister for a important 56. This was the
turning point in the game as Kelburne were now 136 for 9. O'Connell joined
Donaldson for the last wicket and shortly after O'Connell was caught
by a superb catch at first slip from professional and stand in captain
Said off the bowling of Uddin to finish the Kelburne innings at 138 in
45.3 overs. This victory lifts Renfrew to second place in
the league and sets up next Sundays second successive local
derby at fourth place Ferguslie. (Reported By: David O’May),,

JUNE
2ND WEEK REPORT BY RENFREW CAPTAIN : SAI MAJEED Week
RoMacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew
managed to defeat Premier League Greenock for the third season
in succession in the West League Cup group game on Thursday
3rd June 2010. Renfrew restricted Greenock to 116 of 20 overs
with all of the bowlers bowling tight spells, with Kamran Saeed finishing
with 3 wickets for 32 runs for his 5 overs and skipper Sajid Majeed 5
overs going for just 20 runs being the main contributors with the
ball. Renfrew’s reply seen professional Ahmad Said
finishing unbeaten and carrying his bat throughout the 20 overs on 71 not
out hitting the winning runs of the last ball of the match, he was
ably supported by Fida Hussain 31 in a first wicket partnership of
71. On Saturday MacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew
were at home to SMRH (STEWARTS MELVILLE ROYAL HIGH) on SNCL div 2
business, Renfrew were undefeated in their last two whereas SMRH had lost
the last two. Skipper Sajid Majeed won the toss and elected to
bat first, and his decision was vindicated by his batsmen who, when the
reached a total of 230 for 7 wickets in 50 overs, professional Ahmad Said
hit 27, Fida Hussain top scored with 84 and Anjum Aslam hit a quick fire
55. The SMRH challenge was brushed aside comfortably
with them all out in 31.1 overs for 105 with Majeed picking up one wicket
and Kamran Saeed, Imtiaz Uddin, Fida Hussain and Mohsin Majeed picking up
a two wickets each. On Sunday MacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew
playing their third game in 4 days at home against a strong Premier league
side in Dunfermline Knights in the Scottish cup 2nd round,
found last years losing finalists too strong for them by conceding
305 runs in 50 overs with former Renfrew player Abi Shakoor top scoring
with 85 for Dunfermline as they ran out comfortable winners by 181 runs.
This was a disappointing result, but considering the pedigree of the
Dunfermline team and the game on Sunday just being a game too many for
Renfrew it was not surprising. With the 2nd XI recording a
comprehensive victory over Marress on Saturday by 168 runs and taking top
place in WDCU div4, the under 11s and under15s both defeating Glasgow

the first team in action at home, McTaggart and Mickel Renfrew’s second
eleven Moorcroft visited Marress to face Irvine's seconds, looking to
maintain their excellent run of form and take over as leaders of WDCU
Division 4. The hosts won the toss and put Moorcroft into bat on
their artificial wicket. Openers
Graeme Phillips and Clayton Lambert put on 79 for the first wicket before
Graeme was out bowled by one that kept low for 33. Anil Roy was in
at number 3 and immediately raced towards his first half century of the
season with some well timed boundaries. Clayton however was to fall 5 runs
short of his own 50 as he was caught behind on 45. Arfan Sabir was
next in and just like Anil, began his innings in positive fashion. However
despite looking in good touch, he was next to depart, bowled on 26.
Moorcroft captain Parvase Majeed then came to the middle with the score
on 241/3 and with Anil looking in fine touch, set for his maiden
Moorcroft century, when disaster struck! On 99, he drove the ball straight
into the hands of the man at point...only for the fielder to drop an
absolute dolly. However having just been given a lifeline 2 balls
earlier, another loose stroke resulted in Anil top-edging the ball and
presenting the Marress wicketkeeper with the simplest of catches. It
brought to an end a fine innings from Anil who was extremely unfortunate
not to reach a deserved hundred. Parvase then continued to keep the score moving
with some boundaries of his own, including running 4 with Javid,
leaving the latter in desperate need of an oxygen mask! However after
the loss of 3 further wickets, he decided to declare, with the score
on 302/7 after 44 overs. This allowed Moorcroft an extra 6 overs to
try and bowl the hosts out. On a disappointing surface, Waseem Ahmed
and Graeme Phillips opened the bowling for Moorcroft and after
initially struggling to come to terms with their run ups, both bowlers
found some rhythm as the wickets started to fall. Waseem made the initial
breakthrough before Graeme claimed 3 wickets to leave Maress on 75/4 Just
like the opening bowlers, first and second change Amir Shezad and Arfan
also found bowling on the track difficult to begin with, and at the drinks
break Moorcroft required another 6 wickets for victory. With the
hosts preparing to play for the draw, any concerns about failing to bowl
out the opponents were immediately quashed as Arfan claimed two quick
wickets after the interval to pile the pressure on Maress, with the score
on 120/7 Amir Shezad then got in on the act with the following wicket
before Muneeb Gill clean bowled the next batsman, leaving two Maress
juniors at the crease as the final pair. The match was promptly
finished off in Amir’s next over to give Moorcroft an emphatic 168 run
victory. As a sporting gesture once the game was over, the
Moorcroft fielders allowed the final wicket pair to stay at the crease and
face one more over just for the experience, as Clayton and Javaid both
bowled 3 balls each with the youngsters chasing 10 runs. With four
required from the final ball, number 10 popped the ball straight to a
diving Waseem at cover, to end any hopes of the free drinks offered from
Clayton had they reached the target. The victory moves Moorcroft to the top of the WDCU
division 4 table for the first time this season as their quest for
promotion continues… WEST
LEAGUE CUP: RENFREW DEFEATED GREENOCK BY 6 WICKETS,
Thursday
3rd June 2010 at KGV Greenock 116/7 (20 overs, KA McLaren 37, WJ Rowan
34, K Saeed 3/32, I Uddin 2/27). MacTaggart & Mickel Renfrew were in action
again in midweek as they faced Premiere Division side Greenock in their
second West League Cup game of the season. After the final ball
heartache of the previous game in the competition against Ferguslie,
Renfrew were looking to bounce back strongly. Having won the toss and put the visitors in to bat,
Renfrew’s opening bowlers, captain Sajid Majeed and Imtiaz Uddin kept the
visitors at bay with fine spells of tight bowling. Imtiaz picked up
the first two wickets and at the half way stage of the innings, Greenock
were 47/2. Despite the efforts of captain Kevin McLaren (37) and
Willie Rowan (34), the visitors could only manage 116/7 at the end of
their 20 overs. Kamran Saeed was the pick of the Renfrew bowlers,
taking 3-32. In
reply, Renfrew sent in club professional Ahmed Said to open the innings
along with Fida Hussain, and the two managed to put 71 on the board before
Fida was out caught at mid-on for 31. After the fall of the first
wicket, Zia Ul Haq and Anjum Aslam both failed to contribute and were out
cheaply as the Renfrew innings slowly began to lose momentum.
However Ahmed kept things moving with a brilliant array of attacking shots
and together with Wasim Khan looked to be guiding Renfrew towards
victory. Somehow Greenock managed to take the game down to the last
over, and with 2 required to win, Wasim Khan was out caught off the
penultimate ball of the innings. Luckily the batsmen crossed leaving
Ahmed on strike with 2 runs required from the last ball. With the
fielders in, ‘the Pro’ showed his class and drove the ball sweetly through
the covers to bring an end to an exciting game of cricket and take Renfrew
to a well deserved victory. Man of the match Ahmed finished unbeaten
on 71 to maintain his recent run of good form and keep Renfrews West
League Cup hopes alive for the 2010 campaign. RENFREW

(43.3 overs, A Said 75, F Hussain 31, S Olivier 3-17) MacTaggart and Mickel Renfrew Cricket Club have
jumped into third spot in the SNCL Second Division after they posted their
third league victory of the season. Captain Sai Majeed’s side, who are
sponsored by travelled to Edinburgh to take on RH Corstorphine and,
thanks to their three-wicket victory, they now leapfrog their opponents in
the division. Renfrew captain Majeed, who later picked up a facial injury
during a fielding accident, lost the toss and opposition skipper Rob More
decided to bat first. With showers in the air, the start of the match was
delayed and the game reduced to 46 overs per side. The visitors started
well in the field and, in the fifth over, Kamran Saeed made the first
break through when he had Corstorphine professional Mohammed Ramzan LBW
for six with the total on 14. Jason Biddulph continued his good form in a second
wicket partnership with Dave Stewart. However, Stewart was bowled by
Majeed for nine with the score on 33 for the loss of two wickets in the
10th over. With Biddulph looking set for a large score, Renfrew introduced
the spin of professional Ahmad Said in the 13th over and it had the
desired result, with Said taking a caught and bowled chance to remove the
dangerous Biddulph for 23 with the total on 39. Renfrew continued their
grip on the match with a second wicket for Majeed in the 14th over with
the score still on 39. Fida Hussain was introduced into the attack and
Renfrew’s two spinners started to turn the screw on Corstorphine. Captain
Majeed picked up a serve facial injury during fielding and needed to leave
the field for treatment and was replaced in the field by scorer David
O'May. Hussain took three wickets to reduce the home team to 132 for eight
in the 42nd over. Moshin Majeed took the final wicket in the last over,
leaving Corstorphine on 152 all out. In reply, Renfrew opened with Said and Paul Goodman
and they put on a solid 39 for the first wicket when Goodman was bowled by
Kinghorn-Gray. Hussain joined Said and they produced 67 runs for the
second wicket before Hussain was out for 31 LBW to Ramzan with the score
on 104 in the 29th over. Said batted through until the 42nd over when he
was finally out for 75 with the score on 144 for seven. Uddin came in to
join Saeed and this lead to the sight of Sai Majeed sitting with his pads
on and holding his ice pack over his swollen face. Uddin and
Saeed successfully added the additional runs required to see Renfrew
home with three wickets remaining. Saeed hit the winning runs with a
boundary four to finish the match on 156 for seven. Olivier took three
wickets for Corstorphine.

BEAT SCOTINDIAN BY 1 WICKET AT KGV,
WDCU:4,
May 29, 2010, ScotIndian 197 all-out, Moorcroft 198/9, Match
Photos In
one of the closest matches faced by Renfrew’s second eleven for a long
time, Moorcroft beat Scotindians by 1 wicket in a nail-biting encounter to
maintain 2nd place in WDCU division 4. Having won the toss, Moorcroft put the visitors
into bat in bowling friendly conditions. On a green wicket opening
bowler Waseem Ahmed was extracting lively pace and bounce, and at the
other end Graeme Philips was moving the ball both ways. This combination
allowed the hosts to restrict Scotindians to 49/5 by the drinks break.
However, as has been the case all season, complacency set in and Moorcroft
allowed their opponents back into the game. Despite Irfan claiming 2
wickets in between, the hosts managed to somehow rack up a daunting 197
before Taral dismissed their final 2 batsmen. Chasing 198 for victory, first eleven batsman
Balawal Fahim and Graeme Philips opened the Moorcroft innings and despite
a steady start Philips was out caught for 17. Balawal was looking in good
touch however he was next to go, caught brilliantly at slip for 20, and to
make things worse, captain Parvase Majeed and Taral Khasiya fell in quick
succession - both to even more amazing catches from the vigorous
Scotindian fielders leaving the hosts on 94/4. The away side were now on
top, despite Moorcroft being ahead of the required run rate, as hard
hitting number 6 Irfan Sabir came to the crease. He and Ghulam
Rabbani, who was in at 3, then set about rebuilding the innings, however
Irfan was not standing around and proceeded to blast 4 massive sixes,
including 2 into the houses, as Moorcroft began to pick up the pace.
Unfortunately he was to fall agonisingly short of his maiden half-century
as he edged to slip and was out for 46. With 36 runs required from 15.4 overs, it looked as
though Moorcroft had the game in the bag. However in typical Renfrew
fashion, Javid was out caught at mid on and was followed by Uzair who was
comprehensively bowled next ball. To continue the collapse, Ryan Murray
and debutant Gareth Law both failed to trouble the scorers leaving
ScotIndians needing 1 final wicket to complete a remarkable
turnaround. With 28 runs required for a Moorcroft win, Waseem
Ahmed joined Ghulam in the middle. Despite the intense pressure
there were 9.3 overs to go so the equation was simple; Waseem hold up an
end and provide the set batsman with strike to complete the job. The plan
worked to perfection as Waseem held his nerve and defended brilliantly,
allowing Ghulam - with the help of some useful extras - to finish unbeaten
on 80 and take Moorcroft to victory. MACTAGGART

BEAT KIRKSTYLE AT ACADEMY PARK BY 18 RUNS,
WDCU:4,
May 22, 2010 Moorcroft
163 a/o, Kirkstyle 145 a/o Moorcroft kept the pressure on WDCU leaders St
Ninians by beating Kirkstyle in a tense finish at Academy Park on
Saturday. Having lost the toss and been put in to bat on a
wicket that had not been rolled by the hosts, Moorcroft’s innings did not
go as planned as Anil Roy was caught at gully for 7 in the 5th over, and
was shortly followed by captain Parvaise Majeed, out edging behind on 2.
This brought together Clayton Lambert and Graeme Phillips who set about
rebuilding the innings. After a shaky start, Clayton began to motor on
with some well struck boundaries including a six, but was out bowled just
after the drinks break.
Graeme, looking as composed as ever, moved steadily on to 46. However he was unfortunate to be
out caught 4 short of a deserved half-century. The pitch was beginning to
show its disproportion and the Moorcroft innings began to fall apart as
the visitors went from being 114/4 to 146/9. Some late hitting from
debutant Irfan managed to take the score up to a reasonable, but far from
comfortable, 163 all out. In reply, Kirkstyle’s innings got off to the worst
possible start as Moorcroft’s opening bowlers Waseem Ahmed and Anil Roy
ripped through the top order at ease. With the hosts reeling on 46/5,
Moorcroft sensed victory was near, however Kirkstyles 13 year old batsman
M.Azeem Jnr had other plans and began to show some resistance with a well
crafted 28. However, just like Clayton earlier on, 2 balls after the
drinks break, he was bowled by Waseem, and was shortly followed back to
the pavilion by the next batsman in the same over to all but end any hopes
of a Kirkstyle victory.
Having seen out Waseem Ahmed’s marathon spell of 15
overs on the trot and with Anil being replaced at the other end, Kirkstyle
went on the defensive and looked content with going for the draw. However with the pace of the game
slowing right down, complacency began to show in the field, and Kirkstyle
suddenly began to sniff at an opportunity of victory as J.Raine and
M.Azeem Snr put on 77 for the 8th wicket. Suddenly with less than 30 runs
required in 15 overs, the game had turned on its head and Kirkstyle were
now in the ascendancy. With
no other options working, Moorcroft captain Parvase Majeed decided to
bring Anil back on and it turned out to be a wise decision as he trapped
Raine lbw to swing things back in favour of the visitors. This triggered a Kirkstyle
collapse as Taral Khasiya had the next batsman caught out in the following
over to leave Moorcroft needing 1 more wicket for victory. However M.Azeem Snr was still
around and proceeded to take the attack to the Moorcroft bowlers to leave
Kirkstyle needing 18 to win from the final 10 overs. But his valiant effort was to come
to and end as he was out bowled by Irfan for 44 in the 49th over to bring
an end to a game Moorcroft should have comfortably won, but somehow
managed to make as difficult as possible for themselves. The victory maintains Moorcroft’s
position as 2nd in the WDCU 4th division. WEST

Renfrew Captain Sai Majeed elected to bat first and his decision proved to

went on to complete his 100 in partnership with Anjum Aslam who added 28
before being caught from the bowling of McLean. Said was finally out with
three balls of the innings left for 132 with the score on 269. Renfrew
finished their innings on 271 for the loss of 7 wickets from their 50

Innings 240/3 (37.1 Overs), (A After
two heavy defeats to Marress and Hamilton Thistle, it was essential for
Moorcroft to take a large slice of the points on offer from this game.
Similar problems of player unavailability were prevalent at the start of
the match as they had been for the previous two. However, crucially in
this match prior to the completion of the 1st Innings Moorcroft
had a full 11 on the park, which had not been the case in previous
matches. Parvase
Majeed, Moorcroft captain won the toss and decided to field hoping to
restrict Kirkstyle to a chaseable total. It did not start well. Moorcroft
started with eight as three players were arriving late. It was imperative
that the opening bowlers held a very tight line and length due to the many
gaps in the field. The captain’s words went unheeded as both A Shan and A
Shehzad gave 57 runs of the first 6 overs. Captain P Majeed decided to
take of both openers and bring on the mercurial Graeme Phillips and Taral
Khasiya. Graeme accurate spell of 2 for 37 from 15 overs brought the run
rate down. This was even more impressive as Kirkstyle were able to take
runs at will due to the gaps in the field. It wasn’t until the
30th over when Moorcroft had a full 11 on the park. Graeme
removed P Ruddock who looked very dangerous for 46 in the 15th over,
putting on a stand of 65 with M Saleem. M Saleem (50) and Junaid (54) put
on a 75 3rd wicket partnership. Once both of these batsmen were
removed Moorcroft were able to take wickets regularly. Amir Shehzad came
back for a second spell and bowled more accurately and was rewarded with 4
wickets from his 12 overs and A Shan in his second spell took the wicket
of Junaid (54). This was the last big partnership amounting to 42. Anil
Roy who was unable to bowl until the 44th over came on and was
rewarded with two wicket aided by a sharp catch by Parvase Majeed behind
the stumps and the other by Amir Shehzad. Mohsin Majeed who was also
unable to bowl until the 44th over came on for the last over
and only needed one ball to remove the last batsman assisted by Graeme
Phillips taking a looping catch. Kirkstyle were all out for 239 in the
50th over. The
total of 240 was a very daunting target. It was critical for the Moorcroft
batsmen to build long partnerships in order not to put pressure on the
middle and lower order. Moorcroft opened with A Roy and P Majeed
(captain). It was a case of simple mathematics for the openers as P Majeed
indicated to A Roy. “push for 5 singles per over and avoid any risky
shots” The strategy employed by both openers not to take any risks with
aerial shots and push the ball into gaps for ones and twos was very
successful. The 1st wicket partnership of 149 was the main
catalyst in chasing down the 240 target. P Majeed was out for 60 (8
boundaries) trying to push for a single down the slip channel. A Shan came
in at three to partner A Roy. A Renfrew
finished with over 12 overs to spare and chased down the 240 target for
the loss of only three wickets. This was an excellent performance after
the previous two setbacks and maintained Moorcoft’s 4th spot in
the league. (Reported by: Parvase Majeed). RENFREW BEAT

Inning 153 allout (33.5 Overs, D Yadav 72, A Roy 6/33, T Khasiya
2/14) A much
changed Moorcroft team took on Hillhead 2ndXI at KGV Playing fields and
were indebted to Tariq WAli for a brilliant innings of 125 and Anil Roy
with a devastating spell of bowling to give them a 98 run victory.
Batting first Moorcroft Roy was out in the first over leaving Moorcroft
2-1. Graeme Phillips came in at 3 and together with Parvase Majeed took
the score to 37 before Majeed was out for 17. This sparked yet another
collapse as Taral Khasiya and Waji Uddin were both dismissed for 0.
Despite a ropey start to his innings Tariq Wali soon found the bowling to
his liking and started to dispatch the ball to all areas of the park.
Along with Graeme 100 runs were added with Phillips scoring only 20 of
them (although he was hampered by a hamstring injury which caused Anil to
run for him) With the score on 148 Phillips was out for 43. Tariq
continued to splay the ball to all areas of KGV and had a 52 run
partnership with Amir Shezad before Shezad was out for 7. With the
score on 223 though Tariq fell bowled for 125 an innings which included 8x
6's and 8x4's. With maximum batting points obtained Parvase Majeed decided
to declare with 3 over remaining in order to improve the writer's batting
average setting Hughenden a target of 252 to win in 53
overs. Moorcroft
started well and in the 4th over Majeed took a catch off Anil to
leave the visitors 7 for 1. Hughenden seemed to settle though but with
score on 19, Anil struck twice in two balls and in his following over took
another two wickets. In the space of 11 balls he took 4 for 6. This
brought Yadav to the crease and he then gave Hughenden hope by trying to
emulate Tariq. Wickets continued to fall at the other end though with
Parvase Majeed making a magnificent one handed stumping off the bowling of
Colin McLardie and Ryan Murray and Shobhit Dihora taking remarkable
catches. It was left to Taral Khasiya to finish off the match having Yadav
caught by Amir for 72 and next ball bowling the no 11 leaving
Hughenden all out for 153. This was an excellent performance and took
Moorcroft up to third place in the league(Reported by: Colin

BEAT GARSCUBE BY 21 RUNS AT GARSCUBE, 30 May 2009 (Photos) Moorcroft 113(all-out T Khasiya 28,
G Phillips 24, Gilchrist 4-18 ) Garscube 92 (all-out Amin 4-19, G
Phillips 3-24, Shani 3-35) On what was the hottest day of the
year Moorcroft travelled to Garscube's picturesque ground and ground out a
20 run victory. After being asked to bat first, Moorcroft started as
though it was a 20/20 match and openers Graeme Phillips and Parvase Majeed
had scored 27 after 3 overs. As the bowlers found their line and length
the scoring rate slowed but after 8 overs the score had reached 40 before
Majeed was bowled for 17. This sparked a typical collapse and another two
wickets fell with only one more run added. Taral Khasiya came in and
steadied the ship and took the score up to 54 before Philips was out
for 24. With the run rate slowing dramatically Amin came in to join Taral
and together they took the score to 68 before Amin was caught for 9. Shani
came in and along with Taral pushed the score to 97 before Taral was
stumped for 28. Without another run added Shani was bowled for 12 and
despite a flurry from Shobhit and Aslam, Moorcroft were dismissed for 112
in the 46th over. Tight bowling and fielding was
important if Moorcroft were to get anything from the game and Shani
produced an incredible first over - 5 wide and 2 wickets. Garscube settled
though and took the score to 34 before Graeme Phillips
struck removing Copeland for 7. Shani was bowling very erratically
but stuck again before being taken off as the wide count had reached
embarrassing proportions. Amin came on and along with Graeme bowled well
and together they kept the Garscube batsmen tied down and they eventually
dismissed the home side for 92 in the 32nd over, Graeme finishing with 3
for 24 from his 15 overs and Amin taking 4 for 19. Embarrassingly the
total of 92 contained 40 extras (31 of which were wides). This is
something Moorcroft need to work on if they are to be challenging for
promotion at the business end of the season. (Reported by: Colin

TO Mactaggart
& Mickel Renfrew managed to finally play their first home match of the
SNCL season against Imans Edinburgh who were unbeaten, with the home side
still without professional Ahmed Said there was still optimism going into
this match, which due to the weather had a delayed start and was reduced
to 48 overs a side. Renfrew skipper Sajid Majeed lost
the toss and Mactaggart and Mickel Renfrew were put into bat by
Skipper Majeed and Kamran Saeed
opened the bowling in Edinburgh’s innings and not only kept the
score down but Saeed managed to claim the first three wickets with Shakoor
taking two great catches behind the stumps with the score on 32. Majeed
had opener Raja Javed dropped at first slip
before Javed eventually fell to the off spin off Hussain with
the score on 60. This brought ex Frew player Abid Shuja to the
crease, he struggled to cope with the off spin of Hussain and Ulhaq but
was fortunate enough to be dropped on three separate occasions allowing
him to get to 62 before he was out with the total now on 175 after 41
overs. Edinburgh needed 61 of the next 7 overs with 4 wickets remaining,
the ods were against them so the Renfrew players decided to even them up
dropping another two catches before Edinburgh batsman Imran Akthar who had
been the one dropped twice hitting the penultimate ball of the innings fo
a 6 to win the game by 1 wicket finishing on 239. A disastrous fielding performance by
Renfrew dropping 7 catches and managing to lose a game which should have
been won easily. There will definitely be extra catching practice before
the next game because Renfrew cannot afford to drop any more points; they
did manage to pick up two bonus points which kept them off the foot of the
table. (Reported by Sai) VICTORY OVER
VALE PUTS MOORCROFT TOP
(Scorecard) Renfrew's
second XI moved into joint top spot of the Western Union Division 4 with a
reasonably comfortable victory over Vale of Leven at KGV on Saturday. With
the previous week game at Ardrossan called off, along with all the other
matches in the Division, Moorcroft knew victory was essential. A spate of
call offs led to some late re-jigging of the team and the late arrival of
some players meant that on winning the toss Parvase Majeed decided to bat
first on a tricky wicket. Majeed and Graeme Phillips started well and had
put on 33 for the first wicket in 11 overs, when Majeed was too casual in
going for a single and was run out for 23. Kamal Singh came to the wicket
and despite a nervy start buckled down and along with Phillips took the
score to 100 before he was out LBW for 39. This heralded an infamous and
all too familiar batting collapse as Moorcroft lost a host of silly
wickets with only Phillips (29) and Shobhit Dihora (11) reaching double
figures. Moorcroft were eventually dismissed for 160 in the 46th over
giving Vale of Leven 4 extra overs to bat. Pick of the Vale bowlers was
A.McAdam who took 5 for 37. Vale started their innings well and
their openers put on 36 in just 8 overs before Kamal Singh took a superb
catch behind the stumps off the bowling of Shani to remove Dalby for 11.
Vale tried to recover and just as they looked to be getting back into the
game the combination of Shani and Singh struck again to remove McAdam.
With the very next ball Graeme Phillips removed Gyam for 29 leaving Vale
on 58 for 3. Wickets then began to fall at regular intervals and after 26
overs Vale were 82 for 7. However a 31 run partnership (many of which were
wides) between Lawrence and Hutchison let Vale back in with a shout
before Shani dismissed After the match skipper Parvase
Majeed was happy with the win but felt that the batting collapse
and amount of extras conceded were grounds for concern. (Reported

LOST AGAINST MOORCROFT
LEFT FRUSTRATED IN With
Renfrew’s first eleven match against SMRH called off on Saturday due to a
waterlogged pitch and outfield, the second eleven’s fixture against St.
Michaels took centre stage on Saturday. Following the disappointment of
the opening fixture at In reply Kingholm were soon in
trouble at 13 for 3, despite the wicket drying out considerably and making
batting easier, as Moorcroft’s Aamir Hafeez picked up three early wickets
and missed out on a hat trick in his fifth over. Taylor and Wilson
steadied the Kingholm innings for a short time by adding 27 for the fourth
wicket before Renfrew 2nd XI (Moorcroft) were left
frustrated by heavy rain as the opening game of their WDCU 2009 campaign,
away to Kilmarnock , was abandoned before the end of the first batting
innings. Having lost the toss and been put in to bat by the hosts,
Moorcroft’s openers Anil Roy and captain Parvez Majeed got them off to a
steady start as they reached 76 for no loss, before Majeed was to
fall. Anil however was playing the bowlers with relative ease and
helped himself to a good handful of boundaries, including 4 huge
sixes. However he did not receive much support from the other
end as none of the next four batsmen were able to reach double
figures, on an increasingly testing Unfortunately Anil was to fall 14 runs short of what would have been a well played century, given the unpredictable pitch conditions, as he was out bowled on 86 at 129/5 in 31.2, Then just as new batsmen Taral Khasiya and Shobhit Dihora looked like they could steady the innings, the heavens opened and abruptly ended a match Moorcroft would have been keen to win. |
